I've been interested about eve ever since I made my first trail account back in 2006, though I never started playing until now fearing I would move into a cave together with my computer and wither away lol. Though I noticed eve is quite casual friendly after all, taken you read up on it, which takes quite some time though.
The only concern I have before I sign up on a 12 month sub is that of botters/macroers and the likes. I guess most of you know what it is, but if you don't: It's using programs which reads/modifies the eve-client and automates things like, running missions, mining etc etc. This gives those who use it an incredible advantage over those who don't as they can run these clients pretty much 23/7. I also believe they make enough ISK/bot to sustain even more accounts by buying game time cards with that ISK income.
I believe there are four main types of category's that these bots are set to do:
Mining Very basic, these are found in both high sec and low/null. While in high sec they are quite safe, but don't make as much ISK, thou they can run 23/7 without interruption I guess, if not someone cares to suicide gank them. While in low/null sec they automatically warps to a safe point as soon as someone else enters the system thanks to the bot program reading the local chat if someone enters the system. Effects: More ores on the market if sold, resulting in cheaper ships and modules overall. Though the botter makes a huge profit which probably results in higher prices of rarer items. And of course, resulting in the non-botting players attempt to make a profit through mining harder since they mine out the belts and ore prices that gets lowered.
Ratting Warping to different asteroid belts in the system killing npc's, gaining ISK, possibly looting? Also warping to safe points if in low/null systems. Effects: ISK inflation, even more if not looting. Belts being cleaned out etc etc...
Mission running Farming mission rewards through ISK and loyalty points, possibly looting? Also standing farming. Effects: Probably less notable as they don't empty belts from rats/asteroids. Though very profitable I figure, seeing as there is no competition really, unlike ratting/mining.
Market bots Probably not as widespread used as the other mentioned as there is no public released version as far as I know. Though mentionable as there does not take a lot of these bots to make a huge impact seeing how they function. Basically they buy and sell, with a great speed and consistency leeching out ISK from the market into the pockets of the botter. Probably the most profitable, just take a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFv93mNI86w http://www.legitisk.com/market_bot/introduction-to-market-bots-in-eve-online/ Effects: Idk, players with huge wallets buying as pimped out ships as possible blowing your ass up? Probably pressing prices up on rare items.
There are also other funky stuff like autopilot to zero and more, just google "public demands" and lurk the eve section.
Notes: Players who are not using bots directly or indirectly do not benefit from any kind of botting in any way at all. I've read some arguments about bots causing cheaper prices on ships and so on. Well, if you're mentally challenged you might very well believe so. But its not right, CCP would only have to increase the speed of mining/reduce material cost of production etc etc if they find the current market of EVE desirable, if botting would all of a sudden disappear.
Do you other new players care about this? Yes sure eve is a lot of fun even though botting, but so is taking a dump. And I would rather just stop playing right away than somewhere in the future considering getting 5+ accounts up running bots just to be on par. And if CCP makes more money from botters than those quitting eve because of it I guess this could take some time lol.
TL;DR: I can not into botting, can you?
